Common medical test - NEET

NEET or National Eligibility cum Entrance Test 2012 is an All India Medical Entrance Exam for admission to MBBS Colleges in India.

The Ministry of Health, Medical Council of India and the CBSE have agreed to conduct a common all-India entrance test for admission to all medical colleges across the country from next year.

The CBSE will conduct the proposed common medical entrance test for entry to all private and government medical colleges in India (close to 300 colleges of which about 180 are private) from 2012.Almost 8 lakh students take UG medical entrance tests annually but at present they sit for different tests, including various state-level medical entrance tests and the All India PMT which the CBSE conducts. The decision now is that the CBSE will just hold one test for medical aspirants. It has the experience of conducting the largest entrance test in India - AIEEE for engineering entrance which close to 11 lakh students take every year.

A common test will ensure uniformity in UG medical education across states where private colleges are in the practice of charging exorbitant sums for admitting students. It will also ensure quality students entering medical education because states would be obliged to fill seats in their respective jurisdictions with students who figure in the All-India merit list. They would be free to prefer students from their areas but they won't be able to compromise on merit.MCI BOG member DR Purushottam Lal said that the MCI will prepare the course structure for the test and put it on the website for comments of people. He also added that the decision came in the wake of the Supreme Court orders to the MCI to go ahead with one test for UG medical admissions to avoid stress to students.

Key features:

- Test will be in Hindi and English.

- There will be only 1 test for filling MBBS seats throughout India.

- States may keep their quotas on seats within their jurisdiction but they have to take admissions on the basis of scores of common test only.

- The entrance examination would cover all medical colleges except
1. The Armed Forces Medical College, Pune,
2. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and
3. The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh may be outside the NEET’s purview as these institutes were set up by separate laws.

- While the MCI will not touch the management quota, it insists that even management quota candidates should come from the national merit list. The objective was to set up a standard for basic medical education. The minority institutions would continue to have a quota and a private college could have a management quota. But the reserved seats would have to be filled on the basis of merit.

Advantages to students:
- A single test, so only one hard try is needed to get admissions in all colleges.
- Student will save exhorbitant fees of different entrances.

Disadvantages:
If the test goes a spoil due to any reasons, the student loses his opportunity for admissions that year. Currently, there are multiple tests, so if one is spoilt, student can do better in another.

It is a good thing to build a standard set up for all medical aspirant students. But the govt. should think about the students who belong from the villages. They will have more problems. The students of class XII of various state board will be the sufferer.Only the students of CBSE board will be benefited. The govt. should not be partial to that board like this. This decision of MCI is in favour of some institutes like AKASH,PATHFINDER etc.MCI is implementing their decision being partial to some institutes and CBSE board
